Many conservative bloggers, too upset about Dems passing legislation their Republican congress balked on during their tenure to think constructively, have been focusing all of their rhetorical efforts on making Iraq a problem of Democrat creation. Well, unlike the Republican-controlled congress, Democrats do pay attention to what matters to Americans – and conservative bloggers should be very careful what they wish for.

“Iraq is the elephant in the room,” said Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.), a member of the House Armed Services Committee and a close ally of Pelosi’s.

“The challenge for them is this: Iraq is the central issue. It’s an enormous problem for the president and the Republicans, but it has the suffocating effect of taking attention away from the Democrats’ domestic legislative priorities, and I think they understand that,” said Joe Lockhart, a White House press secretary in the Clinton administration.

*snip*

“When Democrats were in the minority, the default position of the Republican leadership was to take the war off the table, but the war is the 800-pound gorilla,” [Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Ohio)] said. “It ain’t moving off the table. Congress has to intervene right now.”

I’m sure that this is the kind of story that will just blow away conservative who have been (falsely) led to believe that any change in course is some kind of weakness. I have no doubt that the tighty-rightie pundits will try to spin this as some kind of flip-flopping, but the fact remains that a Democratic congress seems to have better listening skills than a recalcitrant and unresponsive Republican congress demonstrated.

And it is the elephant in the room – this war is of Republican creation. They own it. They’ve ran the past three elections from the standpoint of scaring the ever-loving crap out of their base with stories of terrorism and what would happen if Democrats would ever be allowed to take control; it would be absolute bedlam…

…for Republicans who are now going to have to face up to the problems of their own creation and the lies they told to cover them up.
